Zio Piero
(4/10) The colours of the Italian flag provide a suitable welcome to this traditional restaurant. Once, inside the atmosphere is cosy even if there's a whiff of Eurovision and the 70s (and some dismal music thrown in for gratis). Check out the bizarre interior. It's Florentine church meets Boots the Chemist with an eye-catching display of bottles next to some kind of altar adorned with vases and dried flowers. Quite an Aladdin's Cave , and just how mama would have liked it - someone's embarrassing mama.
If it's drinkable wine youâ're after look no further than the house red. From a large selection of starters we chose smoked salmon, calamari and white bait. All good, and the salmon was delicious. The chef also rustled up an excellent bruschetta, which wasn'™t on the menu. Next time we'll test him on something really complicated.
Even though there's a wide choice of main courses this is a restaurant for steak lovers. And here we must pay homage to the legendary speciality of ZP's: the Tornedo Rossini. Fillet of steak on top of fried bread, topped with chicken liver pâté in a brandy sauce. Book your cardiac appointment in advance. The vegetable accompaniments were top-hole: golden sauteed potatoes and cauliflower cheese. The peas are shite, but then they are in Italy too.
If you can face pud, follow the teaandbiscuits rules and don't pick a dessert photographed in the menu. Keep to the house specials. The homemade tiramisu was excellent; coffee+liqueur = v refreshing. Hang the chef who microwaved the lemon torte though.

Disagree with your review, this is the best Italian restaurant in Cardiff better than these new pizza franchise places popping up everywhere. Run by a great family the decor is authentic, none of this new fancy stuff. Best pizza i have ever had, a great night out.
