In detail:

It's quite easy to miss Kemi's Cafe, even on a trip to Cardiff Bay. But then Kemi's is beeched on a traffic island, albeit in the shadow of the Millennium Centre and Pier Head building.

When you walk into the cafe you will always be greeted in a warm and inviting way by the vivacious Kemi herself. Kemi is open 9-5 every day of the week, but extends her opening hours until 9pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. In the evening slot she serves the same lunchtime menu of salads and sandwiches, and is licensed so you can enjoy a glass of Belgian beer or wine with a grilled panini, or a cappuccino with a sumptuous slice of cake.

The selection of sandwich fillings is wide and at times adventurous. I enjoyed a delicious goats cheese and caramelised onion baguette (using freshly piquant goats cheese) whilst Nice Gem assures me that her mexican tuna crunch was worth the trip alone. Both were served with a side-salad (with Kemi's secret dressing) and non-intrusively friendly serving staff banter.

We were seated in the upstairs part of the cafe which has a mixture of comfy sofas and standard tables and chairs. In the evenings, one of Kemi's pixies puts out table cloths and candles, giving the place a more intimate feel. Day or night the view is spectacular. We even had the dubious honour of seeing Derek The Weather Brockway arrive at the Welsh Baftas.

All of this is before we've had a coffee and slice of cake. The selection of cakes is as diverse as the selection of sandwich fillings; lemon drizzle cake, carrot cake, pecan pie, 3 types of chocolate cake, to mention a few. All the cakes are fresh and moist (where appropriate) and the price is a bargain (between £1.75 and £2.50) for a very sizable piece. We have sampled the delights of Kemi's cakes a number of times and they never disappoint. None of these profane cellophane wrapped muffins stuffed with E-numbers, that you see in places like C*ffee m*nia and St*rb*cks.

Kemi has recently been piloting some themed evenings (see the website for details of up-coming events), where she offers a set menu. There have only been 2 so far (Valentine's Romance and Italian Night). It's been standing room only - watch this space for our verdict on future bashes.

p.s. watch out - no plastic, Kemi's is cash only

I could happily stay in this place for hours! It's so relaxing, and the food is great. It's well worth a visit to check out the craft shop/gallery too.
